Mackay hosts a range of sporting competitions guaranteed to interest any traveller to the district. The four main competitions situated in Mackay include the Queensland Mud Trials, Grasstree Beach Motorbike Races, Southport to Mackay Blue Water Classic Yacht Race and a Paragliding and Hang Gliding Competition.

The first fascinating state competition, held in late April to early May, is the Queensland Mud Trials at Sarina Showgrounds. Since 1988, tracks have been constructed with water holes, straights and mud holes. This is to test the ‘Buggy and Bomb’ vehicle and driver, speed and endurance. Another great competition is the Mackay and District Motocross Club Presentation of Grasstree Beach Motorbikes Races. Hosted in late July, it’s an extravaganza of beach motorbike riding, attaining more popularity every year.

Mackay is the finish line for the renowned Southport to Mackay Blue Water Classic Yacht Race. Held in early August, the annual 530nm race is the longest category two race held off Australia’s east coast. An additional competition in Mackay, starting midway through September, is the Paragliding and Hang Gliding Competition. Flights are only in the valley from Eungella launch to Pinnacle Mountain and the aim is to fly the most kilometres over three days.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the competitions held annually in Mackay. Other than the competition itself, there are always a variety of activities, entertainment, stalls and food available at each event.
