The whole of the Mackay district only uses Australian currency. Mackay hosts all of the major banks that offer a wide range of services including currency exchange. There are also electronic banking facilities available throughout the area, usually in shops, places of accommodation and in close proximity to all banks.
Mackay’s currency is the Australia dollar, ($ AUD), and the notes come in denominations of $100, $50, $20, $10 and $5. The accepted Australian coins include the $2, $1, 50 cent, 20 cent, 10 cent and 5 cent piece. Major bank branches found in Mackay include ANZ, National, Commonwealth, Westpac, Bank of Queensland and other smaller regional banks. Each branch has automatic teller machines (ATM’s) outside the doors, operational 24 hours a day. Mackay banks trading hours during the week vary, but are normally closed on Saturday, Sundays and Public holidays. All bank services can be expected including currency exchange for a small fee.
The majority of places in Mackay accept credit cards via electronic banking facilities, also commonly known as EFTPOS machines. The most widely recognised credit cards accepted throughout the Mackay district are Mastercard (including Eurocard), Visa, American Express and the Diners Club card. Please understand that other overseas cards may present difficulties. Another form of payment used in Mackay is Australian travellers cheques. Travellers cheques are safe, convenient and readily cashed in at any Mackay bank branch or a selected number of larger hotels and resorts.
